Students will compete to see who can execute accurate shifting at the fastest rate. Students will perform a repeated five-note scale pattern (click here for the scale pattern) that contains one shift in each direction at increasing speeds until they are no longer able to play the pattern accurately at the given speed.

Students will need to request a starting speed, and then the speed will increase by a minimum of 5 beats per minute for each attempt. The student will receive a score equal to the metronome mark of the fastest accurate performance. Because of time limitations, students will be limited to attempting only 5 different speeds, so they will need to plan which speeds that they choose in advance.
