Required Materials


(All students should have these materials by Friday, September 7 or within one week of their enrollment into the program.)

Violin and Viola:
Rosin, Shoulder Rest (this is a crucial element for correct fitting of the instrument. If a student cannot hold the instrument comfortably without the use his or her hands, a better fit must be obtained. See Mr. Denne if you have any questions), Extra set of strings (Dominant strings are a much better value than Red Label and strings can be obtained from online retailers for decent prices), Cloth to wipe rosin off of strings
Cello
Rosin, Rock Stop (can be purchased from Mr. Denne), Extra A and D strings,
Cloth to wipe rosin off of strings
Bass
Rosin, Rock Stop (can be purchased from Mr. Denne), Cloth to wipe rosin off of strings

All Choir Students:
60 minute cassette tape
recorder (the instrument) for practice at home
Two-pocket folder for homework
1” three-ring binder with plastic “clear-vue” cover
two pencils
highlighter
four colored pencils in contrasting colors (for instance, red, blue, green, purple)
several sheets of lined paper; several sheets of unlined paper


Woodwinds:  Each student should have at least three good reeds of appropriate strength at all times.  Check with the director if you are unsure as to the reed strength that you should be using.  Each student should have a clean-out swab appropriate to their instrument to be kept in the case and used after playing the instrument.
Brass:  Each student should have valve or rotor oil appropriate for his or her instrument.  Trombone players should have the two-part “Slide-O-Mix” and a misting bottle with them to keep their slides moving smoothly.
Percussion:  Each student should have a pair of drumstick and a pair of bell mallets with them for every rehearsal.  Tympani sticks and auxiliary percussion mallets and beaters will be provided.

This is a list of the required materials for different bands and sectional groups.  Please check the list carefully and make sure that your child has all of the required materials for both  her/his grade level and her/his sectional group.

All Sixth Grade Concert Band Wind (woodwind and brasswind) players:  Hal Leonard Intermediate Band Method for her/his instrument with the exception of horn students, who should buy the trumpet book.  All players should also have the Band Technique Step by Step for their instrument.  (Yes, horns, buy the horn book!)

All Sixth Grade Concert Band Percussionists:  Elementary Drum Method by Roy Burns and Percussion Mallet Technic by Thomas McMillan.  Also, all percussionists should have a pair of drum sticks (with their name labeled), a pair of bell mallets (also labeled), a drum practice pad, and a metronome.  Please buy a metronome with a headphone jack.

All Seventh and Eighth Grade Symphonic Band Wind (woodwind and brasswind) players:  Band Technique Step by Step for their instrument and "Cutting the Changes" by Antonio J. Garcia. Make sure that you get the appropriate transposition. The books are listed as "Bb Edition", "Eb Edition", etc. If in doubt, ask the salesperson to help. If you can tell them what instrument you play, they will be able to help you get the correct edition.  

All Seventh and Eighth Grade Symphonic Band Percussion:  Podemski’s Standard Snare Drum Method and Percussion Mallet Technic by Thomas McMillan.  Also, all percussionists should have a pair of drum sticks (with their name labeled), a pair of bell mallets (also labeled), a drum practice pad, and a metronome.  Please buy a metronome with a headphone jack.
